The Criticisms Against Homeopathy

With the answers to the question of what is homeopathy, a lot of people actually have developed doubts over this treatment method. In fact, it is not only now that homeopathy has been confronting criticisms from experts of other fields of medicine. In itself, homeopathy was also founded as a criticism to the illogical and some irrational concept of conventional medicine. However, conventional medicine experts argue that homeopathy is still not substantiated with facts along with scientific and medical studies.
Although a lot of medical trials have shown that homeopathy yielded positive results, some experts argue that the effect of well-being are usually brought about by the placebo effect among patients. When a person undergoes the placebo effect, he unconsciously uses the idea of “mind over matter” thereby willing himself to feel well after undergoing a treatment method that he thinks will be effective for him. Consequently, he will attribute the improvement of his health and holistic well-being as a result of the treatment that he just recently underwent.
Add to that, a lot of medical doctors consider the questions that are being asked by homeopath practitioners as irrelevant. Homeopaths normally ask a string of questions to their patients, including their emotional and mental condition and their lifestyle before providing a prescription or remedy to their problem. For most conventional physicians, the process becomes strange especially when the homeopath experts use these factors as the basis as to how they would address the problems. However, this is actually how the concept of homeopathy works, since the treatment focuses more on the aspects of the individual in order to provide a cure not only on the symptoms but on the underlying causes as well. Homeopathy revolves around the belief of miasms and disease entities which will probe deeply into the internal organs of the person when left untreated. Furthermore, homeopathy delves into the deeper core of the disease rather than treating the symptoms alone, which is characteristic in conventional medicine. The method of treatment through homeopathy takes the different aspects of an individual in order for the physician to provide a tailor-made remedy that will specifically treat the patient’s condition.
Being devoid of medical studies and substantial evidence are also two criticisms that experts want homeopathy to address. In its introduction in the 18th century, a lot of controversies already surrounded Samuel Hahnemann’s proposals. Experts at that time believed that the laws of potentization and the law of similars were absurd and did not have sufficient evidence with regards to theory and medical practice. Today, experts and parts of the general public are also quite skeptical when it comes to the safety of homeopathy.
It is important to note that although the remedies are not dangerous since they are made from non-toxic and natural ingredients, the risks actually starts when a non-expert advocates self-diagnosis of certain health conditions. Apart from that, since homeopathy is a highly specialized form of medical treatment, getting into this field of medicine requires a medical doctor to acquire yet another specialization and doctorate degree and years of practice and training in order to be skilled in providing and determining the right cure for every patient. The potential hazard of homeopathy therefore surfaces when the treatment is acquired from the hands of a non-skilled homeopath practitioner.
The criticisms behind homeopathy lies in the fact that conventional medicine cannot explain the process of homeopathy and sometimes fail to acknowledge that homeopathy can actually assist conventional treatment methods as well. Most criticisms are made base on the argument that the mechanism of homeopathy is not explained well, however, one should also note the fact that some of the methods that were used by conventional medicine were also actually devoid of any researches in the past.
